Namaqua Wines

Goiya

The merger of Spruitdrift Winery and Vredendal Winery to form Namqua Wines (formally known as Westcorp) has created South Africa's largest single wine producer.

But here big can also be beautiful. An obsession with improving quality, heavy investment of millions of Rand in the cellar and vineyards and an emphasis on providing their customers with good value for money has led to Namaqua wines becoming one of the leading exporters of South African wine.

Huge investment in infrastructure and the addition of red wine cellaring facilities has given the winemaking team the flexibility and freedom to diversify using Namaqua's huge crop, to create exciting new blends specifically targeted at the UK consumer, while continually focussing on improving the consistency and quality of the current range.

The hot dry climate, tempered by the cooling breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, plus rich Karoo soils irrigated by water from the nearby Olifants River, gives the farmers the optimum conditions for the production of the highest qualitygrapes.

Viticulture and Vinification

These grapes are grown in a variety of different soils, from rich, red Karoo soils, to river silt and desert sand and grit. In an arid land where the annual rainfall is a scant 165mm, controlled micro-irrigation is used to coax the best from the vines. The climate fortunately means that pests and diseases are at a minimum, reducing the need for chemical treatments.

Vineyard planting matches the right varieties to the right soils and micro-climates. The more delicate varieties are planted near to the coast to catch the cool afternoon breeze coming off the icy South Atlantic. The winemakers and viticulturalists are now working more closely with the farmers, developing canopy management techniques to protect the grapes from the fierce sun and yet achieve optimum ripeness.

Early morning harvesting has been introduced to preserve freshness in the cool grapes in tandem with strict vineyard selection. Then at the winery, all the lots are kept separate as they are cool fermented in one of the southern hemisphere's largest temperature controlled cellars. Impeccable hygiene, a state of the art laboratory and new oak barrels for premium lots of red grapes and Chardonnay complete the picture. And the best news is that most of these innovations are fairly recent. As the techniques improve and the vines mature, the wines will only get better and better
